Minimum bursting speed
The minimum bursting speed is the surface speed a rotating abrasive needs to reach at minimum without breakage under centrifugal force load. It is governed by standards EN 12413, 13743 and 13236 and given in metres per second (m/s). The minimum bursting speed is calculated based on the formula below from the permissible surface speed (maximum operating speed) and a safety factor defined in the applicable EN standard:
vburst = bursting speed [m/s]
vperm = highest permissible surface speed (maximum operating speed) [m/s]
S = safety factor
As a founding member of the "Organisation for the Safety of Abrasives" (oSa), Klingspor attaches the utmost importance to the safety of their tools. Compliance with the safety requirements laid down in the relevant standards is, therefore, constantly verified. Verification comprises, e.g. the mandatory inspection for breaking strength by means of a centrifugal force test (so-called bursting test), during which the tool under testing (e.g. SMT, cutting-off wheel, abrasive mop) is mounted in a suitable test bench and accelerated up to the minimum bursting speed, which Klingspor even exceeds voluntarily during their tests, at a steadily increasing rotational speed.
To satisfy the requirements set forth in EN 13743, the tool subjected to the test must not break.
The test for verification of breaking strength is performed on a sample specimen after every 1,000 manufactured SMTs, cutting-off wheel / grinding discs, abrasive mop wheels, etc. The user can, consequently, rest assured that Klingspor products always offer the highest level of certified safety that is in line with all applicable standards and regulations.
